About this plan

A 35 by 35 foot modern cabin, 1,675 square feet over two levels, three bedrooms and two bathrooms with a master suite upstairs. The 35x35 cabin plans arrive as a PDF plan set.

Square, and deliberately so

Thirty-five feet square is the most efficient footprint available at this size. A square encloses more floor area per foot of perimeter than any other rectangle, which means less foundation, less exterior wall, less siding and lower heat loss for the same 1,675 square feet. Over a heating season in cabin country, that difference is real money.

How it is arranged

The living space is vaulted with a fireplace in it, and a deck opens directly off it. The master suite takes the upper level to itself. Laundry is on the ground floor, which is where it belongs in a cabin, near the door people come in through.

The 10 in 12 gable

A 10 in 12 pitch sheds snow readily and produces the roof volume the vaulted living space needs. It is steep enough to look like a cabin rather than a bungalow.

Foundation and basement

Drawn for a crawl space, with two basement options included: a full basement, or a walkout if your site slopes. A walkout on a sloping lot gives you a lower level with proper windows and a door, which is a genuine storey rather than a cellar.

The download is a full construction set: dimensioned floor plans for each level, exterior elevations on all four sides, building sections and construction details, a foundation plan with floor, wall and roof framing layouts, an electrical layout, window and door schedules, and a roof plan with pitch and overhang dimensions. Permit requirements depend on your location, site and proposed construction. Your building department determines which drawings, calculations and professional approvals are required, and local review may identify changes needed to the plans. Some departments ask for an engineer’s stamp or a foundation designed around your own soil report; arrange these with a local engineer.
