About this plan
A 20 by 24 foot cabin giving 480 square feet on one level, with one bedroom and one bathroom. It is drawn to be built cheaply, and every decision in it follows from that. These 20x24 cabin plans are delivered as a PDF plan set.
Standard materials throughout
Nothing in this plan needs ordering in. No engineered beams, no custom windows, no unusual spans. Every dimension is chosen so that stock lumber lengths work without waste, which is where most of the saving on a small build actually comes from. Your local yard can supply the whole list.
What it does not skimp on
Ceilings are nine feet rather than eight. That costs very little on a single-storey build, because it is one extra course of framing and slightly taller sheathing, and it is the difference between 480 square feet feeling tight and feeling fine. The windows are large for the same reason.
A front patio extends the living space outdoors.
Roof and foundation
The roof is rated to 95 pounds per square foot of snow load, so cheap to build does not mean limited to mild climates.
Crawl space, slab and pier foundations are all drawn. Price all three locally, because on a building this small the foundation is a large proportion of the total and the cheapest option varies considerably by site.

Permit requirements depend on your location, site and proposed construction. Your building department determines which drawings, calculations and professional approvals are required, and local review may identify changes needed to the plans. Some departments ask for an engineer’s stamp or a foundation designed around your own soil report; arrange these with a local engineer.
