What dual-aspect light does

Rooms lit from one side have a bright end and a dim end, and you feel it without being able to name it. Lit from two, they read evenly all day and the light changes as the sun moves rather than simply switching off. A narrow plan is the only way to get that in a single-storey house, and it is why this one is 98 feet long instead of square.

How the plan works

2,200 square feet holds four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms on one level. The great room is vaulted. The primary bedroom has a freestanding bath and a walk-in closet, and there is a study nook built into the plan rather than improvised later.

The garage is integrated under the same roofline, so the long elevation stays unbroken instead of ending in a bolted-on box.
