Light from above

Clerestory windows sit high in the gable, above eye level. They throw daylight deep into the middle of the plan, where windows in the walls cannot reach, and they do it without any loss of privacy because nobody can see in through them. In a building 50 feet wide that is the difference between a bright centre and a dark one.

How the plan works

The primary bedroom is on the ground floor. Keeping it there means the stairs become optional for daily life and the upper level can belong entirely to children or guests. The primary bathroom has a freestanding tub.

The kitchen has a walk-in pantry. The porch fireplace is double-sided, so it heats the covered outdoor area and is visible from inside, which extends the season you can use the porch by a couple of months at either end.

There is a two-car garage.
