Porches worth four hundred square feet

367 square feet of porch against 884 square feet of interior is an unusually high ratio, and it is the most important thing about this plan. For much of the year that covered space is simply more cabin: somewhere to eat, to sit out of the rain, to leave boots and stack firewood. It costs a fraction of what enclosed floor area costs to build.

Height under an 8 in 12 gable

Ceilings run from nine feet up to seventeen, with the ridge at 19 feet. Nine feet as the minimum rather than eight is what stops the lower rooms feeling like an afterthought beneath the tall ones.

A loft is drawn as an option under the gable, adding a third sleeping space if you want it.

Framing and foundation

Light timber framing throughout, which keeps the material list ordinary and the build within reach of a skilled owner. The roof is rated to 95 pounds per square foot of snow load.

Post and pier, slab and crawl space foundations are all drawn.
