The door opening
The opening is 16 feet 3 inches wide. That extra three inches over a nominal sixteen foot double door is not accidental: it is the margin that lets two vehicles sit side by side without the wing mirrors becoming a daily consideration, and it accommodates a standard 16 foot door with proper jamb clearance.
Why detached
A detached garage keeps exhaust fumes, cold air and engine noise out of the house entirely, which an attached garage never quite manages. It also sits wherever the lot suits rather than wherever the house wall allows, and in many jurisdictions it falls under simpler setback rules than an extension would.
