About this plan

A 12 by 18 foot A-frame, 216 square feet, with a sleeping loft and a front porch. This is the smallest plan in the range and the one most likely to be built by the person who bought it. You receive these tiny a-frame cabin plans as a PDF plan set.

A very steep pitch

The A-frame angle is 67.4 degrees, which is steeper than most. That does two things: it sheds snow and rain almost immediately, and it buys standing headroom of 11 feet 6 inches inside a building only 12 feet wide, with the ridge kept to 13 feet 10 inches overall.

Steep also means the walls and the roof are the same surface, so there is simply less structure to build than a conventional cabin of the same floor area.

What is in it

An open ground floor with a sleeping loft above, and a front porch under the gable overhang. There is no bathroom drawn in this plan, which is what keeps it in the simplest regulatory category in most places and the reason it can be built over a few weekends.

Foundation and cut details

Drawn for skids or posts, so there is no concrete to pour and no waiting for it to cure. Full cut details are included, meaning every piece of timber is listed at the length you need it.

What you get

A PDF plan set with dimensioned floor plans, exterior elevations, framing diagrams for floor, wall and roof, and full cut details.

Permits

Many jurisdictions exempt small structures below a certain floor area from a full permit, and many do not. The threshold varies by county, and in some places it changes the moment the building has plumbing in it. Check with your local building department before you start rather than after.
